Downtime
Thu Aug 08 2024 09:47 am
I don't know what happened, but my DNS/Domain wasn't correctly answering the
call of the bbs.shodanscore.com domain, but as best I can tell it's working
again.
As a general reminder, the best way to connect is to use an ssh terminal. If
you want to go the Telnet route you'll need to use port 8086, or if you want to
do PETASCII I think the default 6400, or 12800 (for 80-col PETASCII) works, but
I admit, I don't customize for PETASCII, so unless someone feels like
submitting some custom art (always welcome), the experience is best in
UTF8/ANSI, and even then, I've lost some of my better art/customizations during
transitioning to newer revisions without really fixing stuff that's
updated/broken.
Bad lazy Sysop. :)
Love,

Good news, the Open-Adventure will save your progress. If you quit and go BACK, you'll continue the story where you left off! Pretty swanky for what amounts to quite possibly the FIRST Interactive Fiction game ever made!

Open Adventure

There's a decent gitlab repository called Open-Adventure which is an attempt to
keep up to date a revision of Colossal Cave. I tried putting the program down
as a Door in the Sci-Fi/Fantasy area. If you enjoy text games, give it a shot
and see if it starts up. I think it should work. Pretty simple, no save
features as was the original. Just a chance to try out some history.

RSS Feeds
Wed Mar 08 2023 11:30 am
I moved all the RSS feeds to their own sub-group. Basically these forums just
post links to news stories. If there's a RSS Newsfeed you enjoy that's
typically leans towards technology, or Liberal to Moderate Left, let me know
and I'll add it.
If you have a decent terminal (SyncTerm) you should be able to just click on
weblinks and your OS should open a browser.
Drop me a note if you like this or feel it unnecessary. I personally use it
just to find breaking news articles. I should get eChicken to make me a simple
script for browsing news stories without all the ads. (Ads suck)

Woot! fTelnet working again!
Wed Mar 08 2023 10:25 am
Honestly the Telnet access from the web portal has been down forever, then it was up, then I had to reset some things and I accidentally copied the WRONG nginx.conf file for the BBS. Today I found the right config file, dropped it in, reloaded nginx and I'm FINALLY posting from
https://bbs.shodanscore.com/?page=000-telnet.xjsSo that's good news. Next up is fixing the doors. I decided to try and get DOSEMU2 running so I can start old DOS Doors. I don't know if I'm going to actually install any, but you never know when having DOS access here might be useful.
eChicken over at electronic chicken BBS has been dabbling with ChatGPT, and he made an interactive fiction door that is SURPRISINGLY fun to mess around with, and it's just you giving commands to the ChatGPT AI. It's up on his board. I highly recommend calling.

More Metal!
Tue Mar 07 2023 01:01 pm
...OK, not really, but look, it's just more BBS Stuff.
I'm in the process of changing the Door Menus over to this new system that I
like. It lets you nest menus as well as make it so you can trigger different
things. Hoping this opens up some new customization options that I hadn't
considered til now.
Let me know if you have any issue running doors and I'll try to address it.
Right now I can't quite figure out how to get the Web Pages to correctly
display the games, so if you want to play you'll need to login via ssh or
telnet the "normal" way.
Also trying to figure out who sbbsecho (message base letter handler/tosser)
isn't firing when new messages get delivered. I'm sure it's just a simple typo
somewhere. If you're a Synchronet pro, I'll take any suggestions you have.
Again, Any feedback is appreciated,

Fido and Mail Woes
Wed Mar 01 2023 10:46 am
So much "illegal attempts" to relay email through the board forced me to shut
off SMTP Services for the BBS. Sorry all. I'll try to fix it or see if there's
a better solution soon, but for now sending email to Internet Addresses or
receiving from the BBS SMTP port will probably fail.
FidoNet is being actively fixed. I got MicroNet working when my Net Coordinator
moved to a new server. I fixed that Network so you might see messages start to
appear. I added StarNet via QWK packet, but it doesn't seem to be connecting,
and I'm having a hard time figuring out how Linux does .log files to make
looking at them "simple".
Once I figure that out I can probably figure out why messages aren't going
where they should.
Board is kind of a mess. I was thinking off re-doing the web interface because
for some reason, some aspects like the ONELINERS at the bottom of the sidebar
and the "Who's Online" section at the top are NOT working.
/sigh, SysOp woes,

Oops...
Thu Dec 22 2022 10:02 am
Well in my quest to remove a crypto miner, I accidentally ended up deleting all
my Synchronet Data files. Basically any message bases, user data, etc. was
NUKED.
I'm gonna hunt for an old WinXP installation as I think that's the only place
that I may have some salvaged data backed up, but it will be old. I'm sorry I
lost so much, but I guess onward and upward...
